Tsiyr (2020)
For septet (flute, clarinet, piano and string quartet).
Microtonal work written for Ireland’s KIRKOS Ensemble.
Tsiyr is an Old Hebrew word which means 'pivot of a door' or 'hinge' as well as 'envoy' or 'messenger'. I find the duality of this word beautiful and fascinating, that a physical pivot is in some way the transmitter of messages. This piece has two very different tuning worlds, and only with the use of a 'hinge' or 'messenger' - a pitch which is barely perceptibly common to both, can travel between these universes be reached. Of course, when one moves unnaturally between universes there are disruptions in the stasis.
To be premiered in Fall, 2020.
